Museum in the Schools

SPRING 2008 PROGRAMS

Bring the excitement of maritime history and marine science into your classroom with a Museum in the Schools program. Each program is grade-specific, activity based, and meets curriculum benchmarks.

All programs and materials are offered free of charge to teachers in Clatsop, Pacific, Columbia, Tillamook and Wahkiakum counties, and the Kelso/Longview schools.

OIL SPILLS, Grades K – 6
What is oil, where does it come from, and why is it so important? This program will explore what happens when oil leaks into our water and how difficult it can be to clean up, and its effect on the natural environment. This program also covers the effect that tides, currents, and waves have on oil spills.

K – 2 The class will share ideas on what materials might work to clean oil from water, rocks, plants and animals. Ideas will be tested. They will participate in a puppet story.

3 – 6 The class will participate in a simulated oil spill clean up, with an emphasis placed on forming a hypothesis about which material will be the most effective. This program addresses benchmarks pertaining to energy, relationships among living things and their environment, and forming hypotheses and analyzing results.

SALMON: A NOBLE FISH, Grades K – 6
Salmon have been important to people of the Pacific Northwest for thousands of years. Students will find out about the interesting life cycle of the salmon. An activity will provide information on how salmon utilize one of their senses. This program addresses benchmarks regarding living organisms, life cycles, basic needs, and habitat.

A SHORE THING, Grades K – 6
The narrow strip of shoreline between land and ocean contains the greatest diversity of living things on earth. The migratory birds of the Oregon and Washington coast will be discovered through their migration patterns and adaptations to food and resting sources.
K – 2 Hands-on participation in “building a shorebird” will point out adaptations.

A SHORE THING CONTINUED, Grades 3 – 6 This program includes hands-on adaptation experiments. This program addresses education benchmarks in science relating to living organisms, habitats, and adaptations as well as geography

H2O, Grades K – 6
Organisms cannot live without water. 70% of the earth is covered by water, but less than 2% of that water is fresh water. This program addresses water quality and human’s impact on it.

K – 2  Students will investigate water on many different levels. They will act out the water cycle, learn what a watershed is, and explore the differences between salt and fresh water. Water pollution will also be discussed followed by an experiment.

3 – 6  This program reviews the water cycle and utilizes experiments to illustrate the natural filtration system of soil. It focuses on water quality issues concerning our rivers and streams. Students will learn what the top seven pollutants found in our waters are and conduct an experiment regarding water runoff.

This program addresses education benchmarks pertaining to cycles, relationships between living things and their environment, understanding the limited resources, and analyzing and interpreting results.
