A Woman of Oonalashka
London 1784
This portrait and the previous portrait show a man and woman of present-day Unalaska Island, in the vicinity of Dutch Harbor, at the northern end of the Aleutian chain. These people are Aleuts, who have quite different physical characteristics from those of the coastal people of British Columbia. They tend to be shorter, with strong physiques and are very competent in their kayaks, which they use at sea in all but the worst weather conditions.
