2023 Pilot Build & Launch

Following a 1-year pause for evaluation, the Museum's Miniboat Program relaunched in 2023 with a dedicated staff member and closer alignment to our mission.  To relaunch the program a test build and launch was completed in Fall 2023.
Follow this process and then join CRMM as we track S/V PuffinStuff!
STEP 1 - July 2023
Wrap your brain around size and scale of the vessel and start planning!
CRMM Boat Educator Olive cuts out a full-sized rendering of a Miniboat and plots how she will tackle the pilot build.

Step 2 - August 2023
Build the Miniboat and decide on the design for the vessel.
The Museum engaged with the community, asking them to vote on their favorite design.
Which would you have picked?

Step 3 - September 2023
And we have a winner!  S/V PuffinStuff!  Now it's time to get some help!
We sent out an all-call for help with the painting and for items to add to the hold for PuffinStuff's journey.
What is okay to put in the hold?
Items that are personal, light-weight and biodegradable:

Paper - origami, poems, letters, drawings
Small stuffed animals
Small fabric items
Photographs
What is NOT okay to put in the hold?
Anything that is toxic, breakable, spillable or spoilable:

Food items, including candy
Lead
Glass
Batteries

Step 4 - October 2023
PuffinStuff's journey begins!
Puffin Stuff was delivered to NYK's Vehicle Carrier SAKURA LEADER by Olive.
The crew assisted in the placement of the miniboat below deck.  Olive, Capt. Suzuki and James Tulley discussed the launch location.
PuffinStuff was officially launched under cloudy skies on October 10, 2023, in the Bering Sea (Location: 54-38.9 N, 179-20.1 W).

Fair winds and following seas, PuffinStuff!
