After John Webber
A Woman of Nootka Sound
London 1784
This portrait accompanied the Man of Nootka Sound and shows a woman of similar age, but without facial decoration, and wearing the traditional hat of tightly woven cedar roots.  Hats and clothing in the form of cloaks made of this material were commonly worn because of its waterproof qualities in the damp and rainy climate of the North Pacific.
